Background of the Study
Digital rhetoric has emerged as a critical area of study in understanding how language constructs political narratives online. In Nigeria, social media platforms serve as vibrant arenas for online political debates where digital rhetoric is employed to persuade, mobilize, and engage audiences. This investigation focuses on the stylistic and argumentative strategies used in digital political discourse, examining how rhetorical devices are adapted to the fast-paced and interactive environment of social media (Okeke, 2023). Online political debates in Nigeria are characterized by the use of persuasive language, emotive appeals, and strategic framing, which often challenge conventional media narratives. The study explores the role of digital rhetoric in shaping public opinion and political participation by analyzing discourse patterns, argument structures, and engagement strategies. This research provides insights into the ways digital platforms transform traditional rhetoric, enabling users to articulate complex political ideas in succinct, impactful messages (Ibrahim, 2024). By focusing on Nigerian social media, the study highlights the intersection of language, power, and technology in contemporary political debates (Chinwe, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
There is a dearth of research on the specific rhetorical strategies employed in Nigerian online political debates. While digital rhetoric is acknowledged for its influence on public opinion, the mechanisms through which political actors utilize language to shape debates remain underexplored. Existing literature has primarily examined offline political discourse, leaving a gap in our understanding of the digital transformation of political rhetoric. This study addresses this gap by investigating the digital rhetorical techniques used in social media political debates, focusing on their effectiveness and implications for political engagement. Without such inquiry, our comprehension of the impact of digital rhetoric on political processes remains incomplete (Eze, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To identify key rhetorical strategies in Nigerian online political debates.

  2. To analyze the effectiveness of these digital rhetorical techniques.

  3. To explore the impact of digital rhetoric on political participation and public opinion.

Research Questions:

  1. What rhetorical strategies are most prominent in Nigerian online political debates?

  2. How do these strategies influence audience engagement?

  3. What are the implications of digital rhetoric for political communication?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it illuminates the role of digital rhetoric in shaping Nigerian political debates. Its findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how language and persuasion operate in digital environments, offering implications for political communication, media studies, and public policy. The research enhances our grasp of contemporary political discourse in the digital age (Okeke, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Digital Rhetoric: The study of persuasive language used in digital environments.

  2. Online Political Debates: Digital discussions focused on political issues.

  3. Rhetorical Strategies: Techniques used to persuade or inform an audience.
